City of Sweetwater issued the following announcement on May 7
The City of Sweetwater has cancelled the Summer 2020 swim season due to the uncertainly of the COVID-19 situation, and associated economic factors.
Sweetwater City Manager David A. Vela explained that much work goes into preparing for the Summer swim season, including ordering chemicals, hiring and training lifeguards, and of course having the funding to allow for those purchases and expenditures.
“The perfect storm of the COVID-19 pandemic, the uncertainty surrounding the Governor’s timeframe for opening up public pools, and the downturn in our local economy leaves no other choice than to close the pool for the 2020 swim season,” said City Manager Vela. “Although the pool will be closed this year, we are preparing for the day when the Governor allows splash pads to open to the public. Our new splash pad is nearly ready to go, and once Governor Abbott allows us to open, we will. So, not all is lost at this point, as the splash pad is a great amenity for the families in our community, requires no lifeguards, and is less costly to operate than the swimming pool.”
