The Abilene City Council has entered into a deal with San Angelo and Midland to purchase access to a reliable water supply.
KTXS reports the three councils will obtain the water from Fort Stockton Holdings, which produces 28,400 acre-feet of groundwater per year from the Edwards-Trinity Aquifer. The agreement will provide the cities with a water supply that can withstand substantial droughts.
“We have the opportunity to see years of work come to fruition in an agreement that will provide water security for West Texas for generations to come,” Abilene Mayor Anthony Williams said in a news release. “I am proud to be part of a team that has worked together to provide for our communities in this monumental way.”
Williams said water security has always been a priority for the city and mentioned former Mayor Norm Archibald’s efforts in making the West Texas Water Partnership happen between Abilene, Midland and San Angelo.
