NEXT Lab is taking the lead on a $30.5 million research program to design, license and launch a pioneer molten salt research reactor based at Abilene Christian University.

The school is teaming with Natura Resources LLC for the project. Natura has agreed to fund $21.5 million to the university over the next three years, making it the largest sponsored research agreement since ACU’s inception. The NEXT Lab will house the NEXTRA, or Nuclear Energy eXperimental Testing Research Alliance.

ACU will serve as host and owner of the reactor.

“We are incredibly pleased and honored to sponsor this remarkable multi-disciplinary collaboration of talented researchers – physicists, engineers, chemists and their students – to support our vision to develop advanced energy systems that are inherently safe, sustainable and environmentally friendly,” Dr. Tony Hill, Natura director of product development, said in an ACU news release.
