A cemetery for veterans will soon be expanded and upgraded through a federal grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
The Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene has received over $1.3 million from the grant through the Texas Veterans Land Board, which will go toward building 1,400 columbarium niches, signs, landscaping, and other infrastructure on about an acre of land.
"It is our honor to provide a dignified and reverent final resting place for those who put their lives on the line for our country," Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush said on the state agency's website. "The Abilene community ensures that our veterans are not forgotten, and I am pleased to work with the VA to expand and improve the cemetery."
About 26,002 veterans and their family members are buried at the cemetery in Abilene. The state veterans cemeteries offer a close-to-home specialized resting place for veterans where they can be honored.
