There were 1,087 students enrolled in Merkel ISD schools in the 2021-22 school year, 0.9% less than the previous year, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Of all the students welcomed in the 2021-22 school year, 50.7% of them were girls, and 49.3% were boys.

Data also shows that the majority of students were white, representing 69.2% of the Merkel ISD total enrollment.

Merkel ISD roughly covers schools within Taylor County with its main office in Merkel.

Among the four schools in Merkel ISD, Merkel Elementary School recorded the highest enrollment of 531 students in the 2021-22 school year.

The Texas education system is currently torn between public schools and taxpayer-funded private schools.

Critics argue that private schools use funds that should go to the public school system, while private school advocates claim they’re offering better education for more Texas students.
