There were 443 Hispanic students enrolled in Callahan County schools in the 2021-22 school year, 6% more than the previous year, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Data showed that Callahan County welcomed 2,571 students during the 2021-22 school year. Among them, Hispanic comprised 17.2% of the student body to be the second most represented ethnicity in the county.

Among the 11 schools in Callahan County, only Clyde Elementary School and Clyde High School enrolled any Hispanic students, welcoming 59 students each in the 2021-22 school year.

Education in Texas is often a hot button issue, especially as test scores lag behind other states.

“The problems commonly cited are flaws in the school financing system, relatively low teacher salary, poor test performance by students…dropouts from traditional schools in favor of charter schools…gun violence, and mental health issues," claimed the Texas Almanac.
