Abilene ISD received nearly $1 million from the Department of Defense for a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) classroom and laboratory to support military families at Dyess Air Force Base.
The DOD’s Defense Community Infrastructure Pilot Program by the Office of Economic Adjustment awarded approximately $50 million in 16 grants, with Secretary of Defense Mark Esper’s approval of these projects, the DoD reported.
The Office of Economic Adjustment invited grants to improve the quality of life for service members and their families. Abilene ISD received $959,831 for the $1.92 million STEM project.
The grant funds came from 2020 appropriated funding. Those funds leveraged another $45.5 million in non-federal funding to bring $95.3 million in investments to Abilene to improve the military family quality of life.
