There were 15,426 students enrolled in Abilene ISD schools in the 2021-22 school year, 1.6% less than the previous year, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Of all the students welcomed in the 2021-22 school year, 50.9% of them were boys, and 49.1% were girls.

The most represented ethnicity among Abilene ISD students was Hispanic, accounting for 46.7% of the student population.

Abilene ISD roughly covers schools within Taylor County with its main office in Abilene.

Among the 27 schools in Abilene ISD, Abilene High School recorded the highest enrollment of 2,027 students in the 2021-22 school year.

Education in Texas is often a hot button issue, especially as test scores lag behind other states.

"The problems commonly cited are flaws in the school financing system, relatively low teacher salary, poor test performance by students... dropouts from traditional schools in favor of charter schools... gun violence, and mental health issues," claimed the Texas Almanac.
